Liquid Penetrant Inspection

Liquid penetrant inspection (LPI), also known as dye penetrant inspection, stands as a dependable, efficient, and economical approach for identifying surface imperfections in welds, castings, and other non-destructible components. LPI or dye penetrant serves as a portable technique for surface assessment, empowering our skilled professionals to conduct thorough on-site evaluations.

What is Liquid Penetrant Inspection Utilized For?

Liquid penetrant inspection is a valuable tool for evaluating non-ferromagnetic and non-metallic materials. In addition to utilizing dye in checking for defects and cracks, it can also be used to determine other surface characteristics, such as porosity.

The Dye Penetrant Inspection process

Before the application of liquid penetrant, components are required to undergo a preliminary cleaning phase (etching, alkaline cleaning, or solvent cleaning). Following an appropriate dwell period, surplus penetrant is eliminated from the surface—excluding any potential defects—after which the part is subjected to drying. Subsequently, a developing powder is administered; this agent draws out the dye that has infiltrated cracks or pores, yielding discernible marks or indications that highlight surface irregularities. In alignment with the outcomes, an inspector subsequently furnishes a comprehensive report detailing the nature, quantity, and dimensions of defects present on the component.
